SANTORINI TRAVEL GUIDE
Santorini is a delight – one of the Cyclade islands in the Aegean sea, it is famous for its amazing sunsets, pure white houses, blue domed churches, and brilliant blue water, Like many islands it was formed by a volcano
I first visited Santorini in the early 90s. Back then it was relatively unspoilt – and it was very affordable. Taking a ferry over from Athens we arrived in the little port in the very early hours of the morning – too early to get anywhere else on the island (taxis and buses had not yet started running, still too dark to walk, and too dark and early for the donkey trips that they still did back then), so we slept (or rather tried to), with numerous others, curled up on a chilly concrete platform at the port, until the little cafe there opened up and we could buy food and coffee, and the taxis started running.
We stayed in a little apartment in a house owned by an English woman, that was extremely affordable. It was a little walk to the beach from there, and several times an old man driving a tractor with a cart on the back would stop and give us a ride! The beach was relatively quiet and not busy at all. There were numerous little trattoria’s with affordable food and drink.
Today Santorini is on so many bucket lists, it is an Instagram dream, and prices have gone up for everything on the island.
