iceland travel guide
Iceland is an amazing country, full of geysers, volcanos, waterfalls, and lava fields, as well as great culture, nightlife and more. See my guide here to the best to see and do in Iceland
Iceland is one of the most amazing countries in the world to visit. It is home to an incredible landscape of volcanos, canyons, geysers, bubbling hot springs, waterfalls, lava fields, lakes and pools.
It also boosts amazing nightlife, restaurants and bars, museums and so much more. It is full of friendly and helpful locals.
A trip to Iceland feels like a step inside the landscape portrayed in a Game of Thrones – for good reason. Much of Game of Thrones was filmed in Iceland, (and Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice!)
Whether you are a solo traveler, family or friends traveling together, seasoned or inexperienced traveler, Iceland is the perfect destination for you.
Driving Around Iceland
Iceland’s roads are relatively quiet and easy to drive along. As Iceland is very sparsely populated it means the roads reflect that too.
The classic road trip to do in Iceland is to drive the Golden Circle. This is where many of Iceland’s amazing natural wonders are located.
What to Pack for Iceland
You will need waterproof, windproof and warm clothing for pretty much any time of the year in Iceland. The weather can change very quickly! See my guide here on the essentials to pack for a trip to Iceland.
Unmissable Places to visit in Iceland
Iceland boasts it all – culture, nature, nightlife and more.
Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is about 50 minutes away from the capital of Reykjavik. No trip to Iceland would be complete without a trip to this popular tourist destination.
You can bathe and swim in the milky blue water of the Lagoon, which is as warm as a bath.
See my guide here to visiting the Blue Lagoon.
Geysir Geothermal Area
The Geysir Geothermal Area is where the Great Geysir and Strokkur shoot their towering jets of hot water from the ground.
Thingvellir National Park
This is a really magnificent national park that is home to Iceland’s largest natural lake and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
The Golden Circle
The Golden Circle is 250km long, and is packed along the way with many of the greatest natural wonders of Iceland.
Reynisfjara
This is a spectacular black beach. Massive waves crash down onto stones on this beach. It is surrounded by granite cliffs, where you can see puffins.
Selfoss
Gulfoss
Gulfoss is home to incredible thundering waterfalls. You really have to see them in person to appreciate how absolutely amazing they are.
Reykjavik
Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland, and is a charming little city full of great food and bars.

Where to stay in Iceland
There are a wide variety of accommodations to choose from in Iceland. Iceland has hotels, inns, hostels and lodges, as well as private accommodation and also five star resorts.
Here are some choices outside of Reykjavik:
Lighthouse Inn. Located in the town of Garour, the Lighthouse Inn has charm and character. It is close to Iceland’s international airport, Kevlavik, also for great convenience. One of Iceland’s oldest lighthouses, Garour Old Lighthouse, is in walking distance of the Inn, and is a great place to see the northern lights.
Retreat at the Blue Lagoon. If you want to be close to the Blue Lagoon on your trip, as well as fairly close to the airport, the Retreat is the place to stay. Staying at the Retreat gives you full access to the Blue Lagoon and all its amenities.
What to Eat in Iceland
Iceland’s cuisine is extremely Scandinavian – think lots of seafood and meat.
